In keeping with the running theme of Star Wars costume being hugely influenced by Japanese period dramas: I don’t know why it took me this long to realize it, but Chirrut Imwe’s trousers, wrap skirt, and baldric are put together to resemble a kesa/kasaya, a Buddhist clerical garment.
The red silk wrap skirt also shows up on Jyn’s mother Lyra, who in initial drafts was a Jedi, and in her current iteration is a religious adherent of the Force in some form or fashion. The garment makes me think a little of the scarlet hakama worn by miko, female Shinto shrine attendants. We don’t think of red as a Jedi color, but vermillion-y red-orange is a trademark hue for the Rebellion, and in the New Republic era, the Resistance. Interesting that it’s showing up here as a trademark of people who are collecting and keeping track of Force-adept- and Jedi-related resources in defiance of the Empire’s general crackdown.
